Day thirty-five. End of the fifth week. What I do now, I do in almost every yoga exercise when I'm on the floor — the sliding, the released oral zone, the initiation from below. It's installed. It's there in the background, without needing to think about it.
But today, something else arrives. Not a new physical sensation. An understanding.
The baby retraces evolution
Looking more closely at the stages a newborn moves through in its first twelve months — the major milestones of neuromotor development — something becomes unmistakably clear: the child doesn't just develop motor capabilities. It retraces the entire history of evolution.
Each motor stage corresponds to a phylogenetic stage. Each neuromotor pattern the baby moves through is the same one that an entire species took millions of years to develop. The baby grasps all of it in one year. Without knowing. Without any intention. Through the sheer grace of the living.

What this explains
This table gives meaning to everything that has happened since Day 1. Stage 1 — breathing, navel radiation, yielding into the floor — was the return to cellular breathing. A single cell pulsing, receiving, letting go.
Stage 2 — Mouthing, head rotation, initiation from the sternum and below — is the head-tail connection. The head that leads, the spine that follows, like a fish's body moving through water. The head is the motor. The rest is carrier.
And what happened at Day 33 — the sliding of the paravertebral muscles before the rotation, that undulation which precedes the movement — that is the homolateral pattern beginning to emerge. The right side of the body preparing while the left side initiates. Exactly like a reptile using the friction of the ground to propel itself before any directional movement.
That wasn't invention. That wasn't improvisation. That was the sequence unfolding, in exactly the order prescribed by millions of years of evolutionary selection.
And consciousness in all this
What is striking — and what I hadn't seen coming — is that this evolutionary sequence doesn't only build motor capabilities. It builds something else, at the same time. An architecture of consciousness, layer by layer.
The first breathing — the swelling and retraction of the cell — is pure consciousness. Before any form, before any direction. It is there, it receives, it pulses. Nothing else.
Then comes the first direction: the mouth that seeks, the head that turns toward something. That is the birth of perception — the first sensory attention, the first movement toward. The organism begins to distinguish inside from outside.
Then the patterns that organise themselves — which side, which limb, which sequence — that is discriminating intelligence coming into play. It sorts, chooses, refines. It observes that the left side and the right side are not identical, and it coordinates from that fact without correcting it.
And when the body can finally move on its own — define its territory, stand up, choose where to go — something crystallises. A sense of self separate from the rest. The identity born from autonomous movement, from the ability to go toward what one chooses.
Millions of years to build a system of consciousness. And the baby moves through all of it, in order, in twelve months.
What astounds me
The baby doesn't know any of this. It knows nothing of reptiles, amphibians, or phylogenesis. It simply lies there, on the floor or in someone's arms, and the programme runs.
Millions of years fit inside twelve months. The entire history of animal life — from the first breathing cell to the biped walking in cross-pattern — is encoded in the newborn's motor sequence. And it plays out completely, silently, without anyone needing to explain it.
In redoing this path as an adult, we are not doing a rehabilitation exercise. We are not correcting a posture. We are following the thread back. We are retracing, in reverse, the history of what we are — what we are made of, from which ancestors we descend, in the body, in the way we move, in the way we exist on Earth.
